PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a supporting catalyst containing ruthenium and tin and having high activity to the hydrogenation of a carboxylic acid, or the like, by supporting catalytic components including ruthenium and tin at least one of which is a halide on a carrier and carrying out treatment with an alkaline solution and reduction treatment. SOLUTION: Catalytic components including ruthenium and tin at least one of which is a halide, particularly chloride are supported on a carrier, brought into contact with an alkaline solution and subjected to reduction treatment with a reducing agent to produce the objective ruthenium-tin supporting catalyst having high activity as a catalyst in the production of a desired alcohol by the hydrogenation of a carboxylic acid or its ester. The carrier may be a carbonaceous carrier or a porous carrier such as alumina, silica, diatomaceous earth or zirconia but the carbonaceous carrier such as activated carbon is preferably used. The alkaline solution preferably has pH 7.5-13.0, particularly 8.0-12.5. |
