An approach is provided for discovering network resources using s Simple Binary Resource Discovery (SBRD) message structure. According to the approach, a network resource is configured to generate and transmit a plurality of multicast "Hello" messages to a plurality of recipients to indicate that the network resource is available and ready. If the network resource receives a multicast "Query" message from a particular recipient from the plurality of recipients, the network resource determines whether the multicast "Query" message includes identification data that identifies the network resource or type data that matches one or more type attributes of the network resource. If so, then the network resource generates and transmits a unicast "Acknowledge" message to the particular recipient to acknowledge the multicast "Query" message and to indicate that the network resource is available and ready. The time intervals in between the multicast "Hello" messages may increase in duration over time.
