PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for industrially and advantageously producing optically active 2-methylpiperazine useful as a medicine and an agrochemical by itself or a synthetic raw material for them by using inexpensive racemic-2- methylpiperazine as a raw material. SOLUTION: Optically active 2-methylpiperazinium-phenoxypropionate as a slightly soluble diastereomer salt is obtained by reacting 1 equivalent of 2-methylpiperazine having 0-98% optical purity with 2-3 equivalent of optically active 2-phenoxypropionic acid in a lower alcohol, a lower ketone or its arbitrary mixed solvent. The prepared diastereomer salt is brought into contact with an equivalent or a slightly excessive amount of an alkali and subjected to double decomposition to give an optically pure S-(+) or R-(-)- methylpiperazine. |
