A number of basic patterns separated (Y) by about 10-50 microns are linked to at least one liquid crystal cell. They form a composite mosaic type structure consisting of heterogeneous and complementary outlines which are arranged to interlock like pieces of a puzzle to make a series of selected characters. A crosshatch of optically passive strips , of width (X) typically 1.5nm, partially covers some of the basic patterns and divides the mosaic up into groups for subscripts (c), accents (D), and large (A) and small (B) characters.
