Ophthalmic compsn., in the form of a topical aq. soln., comprises: (a) an ophthalmologically-active agent; (b) 0.004-1.5 wt.% of an ion-sensitive, hydrophilic polymer; (c) a total of 0.01-2.0 wt.% of at least one salt selected from inorganic salts and buffers; (d) 0-3.0 wt.% of a wetting agent; (e) 0-0.02 wt.% f a preservative; (f) water; and opt. (g) a pH-regulating agent in an amt. sufficient to give a pH of 4.0-8.0. The ratio between salt and polymer components is such that the soln. exhibits a viscosity of less than 1000 mPas. #CMT#USE : #/CMT# The compsn. may be used in human and veterinary medicine esp. for treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension. #CMT#ADVANTAGE : #/CMT# The compsn. has a sufficiently high concn. of polymer to control the formation of the polymer film on the cornea of the eye, but are still fluid enough for ocular topical application. The compsn. is more comfortable to apply than gel compsns. Furthermore, the compsn. allows the controlled absorption of active agent into the eye.
