PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing phytoceramide andα-hydroxyceramide which are hydroxylated ceramides. SOLUTION: The method for producing phytoceramide contains a step to react phytosphingosine with acyl CoA in the presence of ceramide synthase Lass6 wherein the acyl group of the acyl CoA has a carbon number of 14, 16 or 18. The method for producingα-hydroxyceramide contains a step to react a sphingoide base withα-hydroxyacyl CoA in the presence of ceramide synthase Lass6. An acyl group having a carbon number of 14, 16 or 18 can be used as the acyl group of theα-hydroxyacyl CoA, and dihydrosphingosine, sphingosine or phytosphingosine can be used as the phytosphingoide base.
