PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the capacity of a memory 524 by making simpler constitution such that supplied image data are temporarily stored in a memory and read out to be displayed. SOLUTION: The memory 524 stores the high-order 5 bits of image data Cd in which gray scales of respective pixels are specified with 10 bits, and the stored 5-bit image data are read out in a period which is 1 field later and in which the image data Cd are not input. A selector 526 selects all-"1" or all-"0" according to a signal R/C and adds it as low-order 5 bits to the image data of 5 bits read from the memory 524 to obtain image data Dd. A selector 528 selects the image data Cd when the image data Cd are input to the memory 524 and the image data Dd when the image data Dd are read out.
