The apparatus has a latch body (5) to which front (18) and back (21) plates are attached which have both have portions (18B,21B) which project backwards, with the latch actuator (22) being sandwiched between and secured to both of the backward projecting plates. A waterproof switch box (54) contains both an ajar switch and a handle switch. The latch has a latch body that is fixable to a vehicle door and which has a recess in its front side for accommodating a latch and ratchet, with a metal front and back plates fixed to the front and rear sides of the latch body respectively. The back plate has a rear plate which has a surface that is parallel to the rear surface of the latch body and a first angled plate which projects in a backwards direction from the rear plate. A lock lever (39) is rotatably mounted on the latch body by a first shaft and adapted to be coupled to the inside lock button of the door and an actuator is fixed to the first angled plate and coupled to the lock lever so that it can rotate it. The front plate has a cover plate that covers the recess and a second angled plate which projects in the backwards direction from the latch body , with the actuator being sandwiched between and secured to both the first and second angled plates.
