PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for automatically priming and recirculating sterile fluid through an extracorporeal circuit of a dialysis machine having a blood pump, a dialyzer, and a blood tubing set including an arterial line for drawing blood from a patient and a venous line for returning the blood to the patient. SOLUTION: The dialysis machine selectively opens and closes clamps 40 and 72 on the arterial and venous lines 36 and 77 and further operates a waste valve leading to a waste drain 86. A connector attaches both the arterial and venous lines 33 and 66 to the waste valve during a priming procedure. The dialysis machine automatically operates the blood pump 34, the clamps 40 and 72 and the waste valve to flush the dialyzer 54 and the blood tubing set with the sterile fluid, direct the used fluid down the waste drain 86, and recirculate additional sterile fluid through the extracorporeal circuit.
