<p>A local coil for MRI imaging of the shoulder employs a cup-like shell having rigid elements that embrace the shoulder by curving about the shoulder along two axes. The rigid elements may be hinged with respect to one another to assist in positioning the shell about the shoulder and to accommodate different sized patients.</p>
