The method involves determining identification number and actual position of individual transportation unit by evaluation of mobile radio signal of a mobile transmitting/receiving unit, where the unit is attached to the transportation unit. The number of mobile radio participants located in an area of the actual position of the transportation unit is determined. The number of passengers of the transportation unit is statistically determined from the number of participants determined in the actual position.
