<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus that enables coating and drying of both sides of a web, especially a web made of paper or pasteboard in a space- and energy-saving way. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The apparatus includes a first coating unit 14 for applying a liquid or paste-like coating medium to the first side 12a of the web 12, especially the web made of paper or pasteboard moving in the traveling direction L. The coating/drying apparatus further includes a second coating unit 16 for applying a liquid or paste-like coating medium to the second side 12b of the web 12 which is the other side of the first side 12a, and a drying unit 18. The second coating unit 16 works without contacting the web. The drying unit 18 is located downstream from both coating units 14 and 16 in the traveling direction L of the web 12.
