<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simultaneously achieve cost reduction and radar performance enhancement by appropriately controlling the vertical angle of a beam of an on-vehicle radar without using any sensor dedicated to the detection of the attitude angle of a vehicle. <P>SOLUTION: From a picture imaged by a camera unit 15, right-and-left white lines of a road are recognized by an image recognition device 16 to find approximate straight lines on an imaged picture plane. The pitch angle of the vehicle is estimated from the intersecting point of these straight lines. Based on the pitch angle, the value of a control command to an actuator 12 is calculated for varying the vertical angle of an antenna of a radar head 11. The actuator 12 is driven via a controller 13 to keep the direction of electromagnetic wave emission from the radar head 11 parallel to the surface of the road. Thus, cost reduction and radar performance enhancement are simultaneously achieved without using any sensor dedicated to the detection of the pitch angle. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO</p> |
