Ferrioxamine E having the formula <FORM:1008842/C2/1> is obtained by growing Streptomyces antibioticus ETH 27083, Nocardia braziliensis ETH 27413, Streptomyces albus ETH 24454 or ETH 28481 in a nutrient solution containing a source of carbon and nitrogen, and, if necessary, the addition of iron salts. Morphological details of the organisms are given. The culture medium may include glucose, saccharose, lactose, mannitol, starch, glycerol; amino acids, peptides, proteins, peptone, tryptone, meat extracts, water-soluble constituents of cereal grains such as maize and wheat, distillation residues from the manufacture of alcohol, and of yeast; seeds, more especially rape, soybean, cotton seeds and also ammonium salts and nitrates; chlorides, carbonates and sulphates of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, magnesium, iron, zinc and manganese. Cultivation is carried out under aerobic conditions at a temperature of 18-40 DEG C. and is complete in 2-10 days. Ferric chloride solution is then added to the culture and the mycelium removed by filtration and it is then washed with aqueous methanol. The Ferrioxamine E is then isolated by adsorption upon carbon or clay or a cation exchange resin or by extraction with an organic solvent such as benzyl alcohol or isopropanol, or by chromatography. The product chars without melting above 280 DEG C. Specification 963,904 is referred |
