PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide technology capable of more reliably inhibiting irregular combustion in a variable compression ratio internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: The variable compression ratio internal combustion engine is provided with a variable compression ration mechanism, a knock sensor, and ECU detecting occurrence of knocking in a cylinder of the internal combustion engine based on output value of the knock sensor, and executes KCS control changing ignition timing of the internal combustion engine to inhibit knocking when occurrence of knocking is detected by the ECU.
