PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To store read document image data in an external storage device without reading a document again and further without deteriorating image quality, even if vacant capacity in the external storage device is short. SOLUTION: Every time the document of a new page is read by an image reading section, document image data of the new page are accumulated in a temporary accumulation section (S4) and every time the document image data are accumulated, a data amount calculation section calculates a file data amount in a case where document image data of all pages in the temporary accumulation section are combined into one piece of file data (S5). If the file data amount exceeds storable vacant capacity of a storage destination designated by an operator (NO in S6), a control section causes the image reading section to stop reading the document (S11), and displays a message on a display section, the message indicating that the file data amount exceeds the storable vacant capacity of the storage destination (S12).
