PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bill identification device capable of detecting opening/closing of a lid part, using bill detection parts without adding a sensor or the like. SOLUTION: In this bill identification device, having a body part 2 and the lid part 3 openably/closably provided in the body part 2, the bill detection parts 10, 11 each having a light-receiving means and a light-emitting means are disposed in an open area of the lid part. A control part distinguishes the authenticity of a bill, on the basis of detection signals from the bill detection parts 10, 11, and decides the open/closed state of the lid part, on the basis of the detection signals from the bill detection parts 10, 11.
