PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for purifying soil polluted by a petroleum-based hydrocarbon for shortening time required for purifying the soil polluted by the petroleum-based hydrocarbon using bioremediation. SOLUTION: The method for purifying soil polluted by a petroleum-based hydrocarbon comprises purifying the soil polluted by the petroleum-based hydrocarbon by adding 2 to 3% by weight of smoked coal to the soil polluted by the petroleum-based hydrocarbon, further adding thereto a nitrogen-based nutrient salt and a phosphor-based nutrient salt so that a nitrogen content is 1 to 10 and a phosphor content is 0.1 to 1.0 when carbon in a hydrocarbon to be treated is regarded as 100 in a weight ratio, and so that the content of the nitrogen-based nutrient salt and the phosphor-based nutrient salt is 0.5 to 6.0% by weight in the salt concentration based on the water content of the soil, and performing bioremediation under the condition that the water content and the temperature of the soil to be treated are set at 5 to 40% by weight and 25 to 45°C, respectively.
