PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element, which is an STN liquid crystal display element having improved contrast by the use of a non-liquid crystal compound. SOLUTION: The STN liquid crystal display element contains as a component a nematic liquid crystal composition containing one or more kinds of 4-cyanophenol, 3-fluoro-4-cyanophenol, and 3,5-difluoro-4-cyanophenol and has a specific resistance value of 1.0×10<SP>10</SP>Ωcm or more and 1.0×10<SP>13</SP>Ωcm or less. The STN liquid crystal display element of the present invention has an effect of suppressing a decrease in contrast due to the disturbed alignment of liquid crystal molecules, so that it is useful as a component of various liquid crystal displays.
