PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means capable of preventing inclination on front and rear surfaces of an original document in an automatic document feeder capable of double-sided reading of the original document. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus 1 is provided with an original document Gn transfer passage 32 for coupling a paper feed tray 30 for placing an original document Gn to be image-read with a paper discharge tray 31 for discharging the original document subjected to image reading through a reading position; a switch-back path 39 coupled to a coupling position 38 of the original document transfer path 32 and used for sending the original document Gn from the downstream of the reading position back to the upstream side of the reading position so that the top end and tail ends of the original document Gn are inverted; an image reading unit 22 for reading an image of the original document Gn transferred in the reading position of the original document transfer path 32; an inclination detecting means for detecting the inclination of the original document Gn passing through the reading means; and a control section 60 for carrying the original document Gn to the switch-back path 39 when the inclination detecting means detects that the original document to be subjected to double-side reading has inclination, and executing double-sided reading of the original document Gn again.
