PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article using a reflective electrochromic element having excellent repetitive responding property without decreasing the response speed of reversible changes from a mirror state to a transparent state, and achieving a long life without decreasing the response speed of reversible changes from a mirror state to a transparent state. SOLUTION: The reflective electrochromic element comprises a first conductive layer 3 having light transmissiveness, a proton holding layer 4, a proton conducting layer 5, a catalyst layer 6, a hydrogenated metal layer 7, and a second conductive layer 8 having light transmissiveness, on a transparent substrate 2. When the element exhibits a mirror state, the differenceΔϕ<SB>1</SB>in the work function between the first conductive layer 3 and the proton holding layer 4, and the differenceΔϕ<SB>2</SB>in the work function between the second conductive layer 8 having light transmissiveness and the hydrogenated metal layer 7 satisfy ¾Δϕ<SB>1</SB>-Δϕ<SB>2</SB>¾≤0.4 eV.
