PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid-crystalline medium for MLC display having very high specific resistance and, at the same time, a wide operating-temperature range, a short response time and a low threshold voltage. SOLUTION: The liquid-crystalline medium based on a mixture of polar compounds comprises at least one compound represented by formula I, wherein R<SP>11</SP>and R<SP>12</SP>each indicates substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or alkenyl group, a ring A indicates 1,4-cyclohexylene group, 1,4-phenylene group, piperidine-1,4-diyl group, naphthalene-2,6-diyl group, or phenanthrene-2,7-diyl group.
