<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical data reading apparatus capable of reading both of static data codes and dynamic data codes without complicated setting operations. <P>SOLUTION: A barcode reader 20 acquires image data including a regular barcode or an element code of an active code (S10), and determines whether the element code of the active code is included in the image data, based on the image data (S20). When the determined element code is included in the image data, it is changed into an active code reading mode in which the active code can be read (S30). Thus, even in a regular label reading mode in which the regular barcode can be read, if the element code of the active code is included in the acquired image data, it will be automatically switched from the regular label reading mode to the active code reading mode.
