<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a simple, low-cost power source circuit from causing unnecessary scrape of a photoreceptor drum even if a foreign matter adheres to part of the surface of a charging roller and to make the adhering foreign matter inconspicuous on an image. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has a charging voltage output means capable of outputting AC voltages of different levels in inter-peak voltage to a charging means. In the image forming apparatus, when the values of currents flowing in a latent image carrier is detected by a current detecting means and a difference between the average value and smallest value of the the currents is greater than a predetermined value, an inter-peak voltage is made greater than an AC voltage applied to the charging means in an image forming process.
