PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bearing material having a favorable combination of at least one abrasive characteristic and at least one mechanical characteristic. SOLUTION: A polymer bearing material for orthopedic use to be used as an implant material or its part includes one or more bridge regions and one or more non-bridge regions, or substantially non-bridge regions on its surface. This bearing material can be made of a cross-linking polymer, or for example, ultra high molecular weight polyethylene. The orthopedic bearing material has a favorable combination of at least one abrasive characteristic and at least one mechanical characteristic. The process for making the orthopedic bearing material includes applying X rays to a raw material hardened through an irradiation mask having a puncture pattern for cross-linking selected regions on the raw material, and optionally forming the raw material into the bearing material. The crosslinking can be made with pulse radiation beams. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
