The method involves storing basic model of a surrounding in a motor vehicle, and connecting a plug-and-play sensor with an evaluation unit of the motor vehicle by a standardized interface for transmission of surrounding conditions detected by the sensor. The sensor is connected with the evaluation unit, when a faulty operation or a failure of the sensor is recognized. The basic model is updated by the surrounding conditions, and the updated basic model is provided for further usage of the motor vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a device for providing information of a surrounding of a motor vehicle.
