摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a TN type liquid crystal display element wherein a contrast ratio in front is high, gradation inversion is eliminated or reduced and visual field angle characteristics are improved with a simple construction. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element has a TN liquid crystal cell having nearly 90&deg; twist angle &beta; having two electrode substrates 6 and 9 and a liquid crystal layer between the electrode substrates, a first optical anisotropic element 3 and 4 between a first polarization element 1 and the liquid crystal cell and a second optical anisotropic element 11 and 13 between a second polarization element 14 and the liquid crystal cell. In the first and the second optical anisotropic elements, no direction in which retardation values are made zero exists, the direction in which absolute values of the retardation values are made minimum does not exist in film normal directions nor in film surface directions and an angle &alpha; formed by directions formed when the direction in which the absolute value of the retardation value of the first optical anisotropic element is made minimum and the direction in which the absolute value of the retardation value of the second optical anisotropic element is made minimum are respectively orthographically projected on the same plane parallel to the substrates of the liquid crystal cell and the twist angle &beta; of the TN liquid crystal cell satisfies a relation of [(&beta;+89.6)/2]>&alpha;>[(&beta;+84)/2]. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
