PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an escalator which moves up and down passengers continuously in a comparatively simple constitution. SOLUTION: The escalator 100 is configured so that a plurality of steps 31 coupled together endlessly are guided by a guide rail and travel in circulating round a forward path 32 and a return path 33, wherein each step 31 is furnished with movable risers in front of and behind a footboard which admits placing of a passenger. In the forward path 32, the steps 31 transfer continuously from rising to lowing or vice versa. In each reversal part 34/35 between the forward path 32 and the return path 33, the riser of each step 31 moves inside the step so as to avoid interference with the riser of adjoining step, and the step 31 is inverted within a vertical plane.
