PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing (meth)acrylic water-soluble polymer of high purity readily in an industrial scale. SOLUTION: When (meth)acrylic acid polymer is produced by polymerizing (meth)acrylic acid monomer in an aqueous solution, an amount of (meth)acrylic acid water-soluble monomer enough to satisfy for 38 to 72 wt.% concentration in the reaction solution after the polymerization, a polymerization initiator and hypophosphorous acid (salt) are successively added into the aqueous medium, and polymerized, then neutralized. At this time, monomers other than (meth)acrylic acid water-soluble monomers (from which unsaturated sulfonic acid monomers are excluded) is used in an amount of less than 30 mol% based on the total monomers in addition to the above-stated (meth)acrylic water soluble monomer.
