PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission, improving the fuel consumption of a vehicle. SOLUTION: This automatic transmission includes: a basic variable speed control means 9 for shifting a variable transmission 3 to a target gear stage whose fuel consumption rate is determined to be minimum in the range not causing stalling of the vehicle. The transmission includes a shift inhibiting means 9 for inhibiting up-shift of the basic variable speed control means 9 in the case where an accelerator opening is smaller than a first predetermined opening and the current gear stage is a gear stage at the higher speed side than the predetermined gear stage in actuating en an accelerator from the return state.
