PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate the abnormality detection of a recording head without using test data. SOLUTION: A write current of a predetermined frequency is supplied to a recording head according to recording data by alternately switching a plurality of current sources by a switch, and the recording data is written in the magnetic recording medium by the recording head. During a predetermined period after the writing end of the recording data, the switch is fixed to supply a DC current as a recording head current from the current source. Upon detection that a recording head voltage exceeds a threshold value, the abnormality of the recording head is detected.
