The present invention provides a novel mercaptobenzimidazole substituted benzotriazole UV absorber having the general formula (I) wherein Ri is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, Ci to Cu alkyl, linear or branched alkoxy group, R2 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, Ci-C8 alkyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl and cumyl, R3 is a hydrogen atom or a linear alkyl group, particularly a methyl group or an ethyl group and X is a hydrogen atom and a process for the preparation (10) thereof.
