The invention provides a method and system of transmitting a telephone call, comprising: interposing a first adapter between a first telephone and a first telephone utility line, wherein the first adapter is programmed to receive a voice signal transmitted by the first telephone; the first adapter receiving a telephone number transmitted by the first telephone, and the first adapter, as a function of the telephone number, determining whether to (i) pass the telephone number through to the first telephone utility line, or (ii) pass a different access number through to the first telephone utility line; connecting the first telephone utility line to a first server and sending the voice signal through the first telephone utility line to the first server; sending the voice signal from the first server as a series of packets through a packet switched network to a second server; and the second server transmitting and receiving the voice signal to a second telephone via a second telephone utility line; and in particular providing a flat-fee subscription service to the user for use of the adapter.
