PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine starting device for quickly and efficiently starting an engine by keeping the amount of compressed air always appropriate as required for starting the engine. SOLUTION: A supply amount of air set in accordance with air density detected by an air density detecting means 54 is supplied to a cylinder in an expansion stroke on stopping the engine by an air supply means 32, fuel is supplied from a fuel injection valve 2, and the supplied fuel is ignited by an ignition plug 4, thereby starting the engine 1.
