PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an abnormality determination device for a variable valve system which can determine an abnormality of the variable valve train. SOLUTION: An ECU executes a program including: a step for controlling a motor constituting an actuator of a VVL mechanism so as to make a lift amount and an operation angle of an intake valve be the maximum when an ignition switch 308 is turned on (YES in S100); a step (S120) for controlling the motor constituting the actuator of the VVL mechanism so as to make the lift amount and the operating angle of the intake valve be the minimum; and a step (S150) determining that there is an abnormality in the VVT mechanism, if a working amount of a motor (a rotating speed or a rotating angle) from a position where the lift amount and the operating angle of the intake valve are the maximum to a position where that are the minimum, does not match with a threshold mechanically defined by the specifications of the VVL mechanism (NO in S140).
