PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently and profitably producing a hydroxy group-containing compound by the hydration reaction of an aliphatic double bond-having compound with water. SOLUTION: The method for producing the hydroxy group-containing compound comprises subjecting an aliphatic double bond-having compound and water to a hydration reaction in the presence of a metal ion catalyst at a reaction temperature of 150 to 400°C under pressure of 0.5 to 100 MPa.
