<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing an optical film including a birefringent layer provided with desired birefringence with respect to the optical film including the birefringent layer in which a polymer layer obtained by applying a polymer onto an alignment film exhibits birefringence. <P>SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing optical film comprises the following first to sixth steps. In the first step (1), the birefringence of each of alignment films having different birefringence is measured. In the second step (2), a stacked body comprising the birefringent layer obtained by applying the polymer to which birefringence is imparted, onto the alignment film in the step (1) is manufactured. In the third step (3), the birefringence in the birefringent layer of the stacked body in the step (2) is measured. In the fourth step (4), correlation between the birefringence in the steps (1) and the birefringence in the step (3) is calculated. In the fifth step (5), the birefringence of the alignment film for imparting the desired birefringence to the birefringent layer is calculated from the correlation in the step (4).
