<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of accurately detecting the quantity of remaining toner without being provided with a dedicated remaining toner quantity detecting device. <P>SOLUTION: In the detection of the quantity of remaining toner, when the quantity of remaining toner is equal to or larger than a predetermined amount that ensures stable quantity of supply of toner, the remaining toner quantity detecting section 31 uses the result of the calculation of a toner supply quantity calculating section 32, which is based on a cumulative rotating time measuring section 35. For an area where a quantity of remaining toner has become small and the quantity of supply of toner varies, the remaining toner quantity detecting section 31 uses the result of the calculation of a toner consumption quantity calculating section 33, which is based on a pixel counting section 36.
