PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tunnel excavator equipped with a tail seal device which can sufficiently cope with high water pressure cutoff, and effectively forms a cutoff system without increasing the length of the excavator. SOLUTION: The slurry shield machine is equipped with the tail seal device 26 which is mounted on a rear end of a fixed shell 2 and a movable shell 3 of an excavator main body 1, and has brush tips sliding on an outer surface of a main line segment S1 corresponding to the fixed shell and an outer surface of an widened segment S2 corresponding to the movable shell. The tail seal device is formed of: band-shaped first tail seal brushes 33a to 33d set on an inner surface of the fixed shell in multiple stages along a longitudinal direction; and band-shaped second tail seal brushes 34a to 34d set on an inner surface of the movable shell in multiple stages along the longitudinal direction. Then a first end face seal brush 37 connecting between ends of the first tail seal brushes in the multiple stages, and a second end face seal brush 38 connecting between ends of the second tail seal brushes in the multiple stages, are slid on each other via side surfaces of wire brushes in a tunnel radial direction.
