<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To search secured files and to prevent the risk that the contents of the files may be revealed to unauthorized third parties. <P>SOLUTION: A file search device has: a means for extracting text from encrypted or password-protected files; a means for creating a search index from the extracted text; a means for searching the encrypted or password-protected files according to the search index; and a means for restricting the file search by the search means. A text is extracted from encrypted or password-protected files, and a search index is created from the extracted text.
