PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface light emitting element which can improve the extraction efficiency of light. SOLUTION: The surface light emitting element 10 is provided with a transparent substrate 11; and a first electrode 12, a light emitting layer 13 which emits a light by implanting holes and electrons, and a second electrode 14 that are formed in order on the transparent substrate 11. The first electrode 12 has a periodic structure in the perpendicular direction to the normal line of the transparent substrate 11 and it implants holes into the light emitting layer 13. A part of the light emitting layer 13 to which the holes are given has a periodic structure in the perpendicular direction to the normal line of the transparent substrate 11, so that the distribution of refractive index having a periodic structure is formed on the light emitting layer 13. The light emitting layer 13 forms diffractive grating by the refractive index distribution, and a light emitted from the light emitting layer 13 is diffracted in the direction of the transparent substrate 11.
