PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for stably estimating vehicle mass by removing influence that the measurement value is varied by irregular vibration occurring in an acceleration sensor (gradient sensor) in the vehicle travelling direction just after start of the vehicle. SOLUTION: The output value of the acceleration sensor in the vehicle travelling direction takes an output value while the vehicle is still stopping just before the start; this output value is stored temporarily, and the temporarily stored output value is used as the output value of the acceleration sensor at the start time of the vehicle. The influence of the irregular vibration occurring in the acceleration sensor is removed by this method, and the road surface gradient at the start time of the vehicle can be observed accurately.
