409,354. Paper containing fillers. TITANIUM PIGMENT CO., Inc., 60, John Street, New York, U.S.A. Oct. 28, 1932, No. 30319. Convention date, Oct. 31, 1931. [Class 96.] Paper comprises a titanium pigment of high refractive index as a filler. Titanium oxide may be used either alone, or as barium or calcium titanate, or other forms of the oxide. The titanium compound may be incorporated in the pulp during manufacture, with or without other inorganic fillers, e.g. barium or calcium sulphate, or china clay, or the paper may be coated with a titanium oxide preparation comprising casein, glue, or other binder, by passing the paper over a roller carrying the preparation and spreading it evenly by means of moving brushes. In an example, equal parts of sulphite and soda pulp are mixed, then 10 per cent of clay and 5 per cent of a titanium oxide mixture, containing 25 per cent titanium oxide and 75 per cent barium sulphate, are added. The usual beating operation is carried out, a rosin size and alum added, and the pulp then passed to the paper-making machine.
