An error symbol detection device and method, and a disk drive using the method are provided to enable a postprocessor to detect a symbol where an error is generated even without inserting a parity bit, thereby improving error correction capability of an error correction decoder. An equalizer(205) equalizes signals received from a channel with channel equalization properties suited to a system. A data detector(206) detects data from the signals outputted from the equalizer(205). A modeling tool(2000) is designed to have the same properties as a partial response target polynomial expression applied to the system. A correlative evaluation information generator(1000) generates correlative evaluation information based on a correlation diagram for target output of the modeling tool(2000) and substantial output of the equalizer(205). An error symbol determiner(3000) determines ranking of a high probability of error generation of symbols based on the correlative evaluation information, and determines symbols up to particular ranking from ranking of the highest probability of the error generation as error-generated symbols.
