A communication range extending method using short-range communication and a portable terminal thereof are provided to enable a user to perform communication with other users existing out of the user's connection range through short-range wireless communication technology, by using an apparatus of another user existing within a connectable area as a base station, thereby overcoming restrictions of the short-range wireless communication technology. A portable terminal(100) comprises the followings. A transceiver(110) transceives a short-range communication type signal. A storage(120) stores IDs and ID-related data. A controller(130) searches a directly connectable ID and an indirectly connectable ID by using short-range communication among the stored IDs. A display(140) displays a representative name of the searched directly or indirectly connectable ID under control of the controller(130), and displays an execution screen of an application such as a conversion window of a wireless Internet messenger during short-range communication connection with an apparatus of the displayed ID.
