OPTICAL AMPLIFIER AND OPTICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical amplifier by which transmission quality of signal light on an optical transmission path is easily monitored or managed.

SOLUTION: Output light level information obtained by an output light level monitoring part 30 is transmitted from an output end 1d to a rear stage optical amplifier provided at a rear stage of itself by a transmitting part 50. Output light level information of a front stage optical amplifier transmitted from a front stage optical amplifier provided at a front stage of itself and reaching an input end 1c is received by a receiving part 60. Span loss of the optical transmission path from the front stage optical amplifier to itself is calculated based the output light level information of the front stage optical amplifier received by the receiving part 60 and an input light level obtained by an input light level monitoring part 20 by an operation part 70. A gain adjustment part 80 adjusts a gain based on the span loss calculated by the operation part 70 by a gain adjustment part 80.
