PURPOSE:To make it possible to implement exciting stability of about 1X10<-4> without enhancing power source performance even at a high exciting level or at a low exciting level, by providing a main coil and a secondary coil, which generates a magnetic field in the direction opposite to the magnetic field of the main coil. CONSTITUTION:For example, a constant current (-I0) is passed through a second coil 2 in the opposite direction of a first coil 1 in a deflecting electromagnet, and a magnetic field (-B0) in the reverse direction is always generated. Then a current is passed through the first coil. At a current value (I1), the magnetic coil (-B0) generated by the second coil is offset. When the current higher than that is made to flow continuously, a magnetic field with the current through the first coil appears in the gap of the electromagnet. For example, when I0=100 A (exciting current of second coil; constant current) and I1-I2=100-1,100 A (exciting current of first coil; variable) are set, the range of the current stability required in the first coil is 11 times, and the range of the magnetic field that can be equivalent to 0-1,000 A in terms of the exciting current. In this way the required range of the current stability of the exciting power source can be made extremely narrow.
