<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus designed that will not cause usability of attaching each process cartridge to an image forming apparatus from degrading, where each protective member is prevented from coming into contact with a transfer material, electrostatic transfer transport belt, or intermediate transfer belt, and the effect of pre-exposure on the adjacent photoreceptor drum thereof is reduced. <P>SOLUTION: The protective member of each process cartridge is positioned by an electrostatic transfer transport means. This makes it possible to accurately set a distance between the electrostatic transfer transport means and the protective member. In addition, the protective member of the process cartridge is positioned by an intermediate transfer means. This makes it possible to accurately set the distance between the intermediate transfer means and the protective member. Furthermore, the protective member of the process cartridge is moved between an image carrier and an exposure means located adjacent to the image carrier so as to prevent leakage of light from the pre-exposure means.
