PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low cost friction damper for a base isolation building having a simple mechanism. SOLUTION: The friction damper takes as main constituting members a sliding member 2 made of a channel steel and a pair of holding members 3, 4 which are made of another channel steel having a cross sectional size smaller than the sliding member 2 and keep a friction material 5 mounted in a web part, wherein the web part of the sliding member 2 taken as a sliding part is held from both sides by the web parts of a pair of holding members 3, 4 through the medium of the friction material 5 and fastened by a fastening bolt 6. In the web part of the sliding member 2, a long hole through which the fastening bolt 6 passes is formed in a longitudinal direction. The sliding member 2 and the holding members 3, 4 can relatively move in the longitudinal direction respectively in such a manner as to be fastened in the fastening bolt 6. A pressure plate 11, a plurality of belleville springs 8..., a plate washer 9 and a washer 10 are sequentially superposed outside of the holding members 3, 4.
