PROCESS FOR PRODUCTION OF ORTHO-METALLIZED 1:3 COMPLEX OF IRIDIUM WITH HOMOLIGAND

Disclosed is a process for producing an ortho-metallized 1:3 complex of iridium with a homoligand, which is useful as a luminescent material for an organic EL device, in a short period of time, in a simple manner, at a high yield and at a high purity. An example of the complex is tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium (III). This complex can be produced by reacting iridium (III) acetylacetonate with an organic ligand comprising 2-phenylpyridine in the presence of an acidic substance such as an organic acid (e.g., tartaric acid) or an inorganic acid (phosphoric acid).
